Landscape Dynamics & Global Change

This research explores the patterns and processes that connect biotic and abiotic systems with each other and with soil, air, and water.  A main theme within this concentration is to promote sustainability and ecological integrity at local, regional, and continental geographic scales.

Environmental Management.

This area of research is focused on guiding human-environment interactions to protect and enhance human welfare and environmental quality.  Environmental management aims to ensure ecosystem services are protected and maintained for equitable use indefinitely.  A main theme of this concentration is to identify ethical, economic, and ecological variables, and use them to develop goals for improving the status of environmental resources.  Research themes include: remediation of contaminated sites, improved energy efficiency, waste treatment and disposal, and ecological economics.

Spatial Ecology.

This sub-discipline of ecology and geography is concerned with the identification of spatial patterns and their relationships to ecological events.  Using spatial statistical analyses, events can be explained through the detection of patterns across spatial scales for a plethora of scientific investigations.  Research here combines the spatial approach of the geographer and the functional approach of the ecologist.

This relatively new academic discipline was created to give the broad-based approach of “sustainability” a stronger analytical and scientific foundation.  Sustainability Science brings together natural and social sciences from local to global perspectives.  Themes within this area of research include: indicator development, theory, and applied case studies.

Spatial Analysis & Quantitative Methods.

In my quest to investigate the aforementioned topics, I have enjoyed exploring both traditional (e.g., PCA, ANOVA) and spatial statistical approaches (e.g., LISA, GWR, autoregression).  Furthermore, advanced computer modeling techniques (e.g., cellular automata, artificial neural networks) have been employed for temporal and spatial research questions.  As computer processing power and spatial data quality improve, I look forward to learning and applying future quantitive methods.  Industry standard software (e.g., ESRI’s ArcGIS 10x) and freeware within remote sensing, geographic information systems, and statical analysis are utilized.
